I spent the morning sorting through material for the Library /
Media Tech class on circulation services I am teaching at College of the
Canyons in the spring. In the afternoon
I sat outside in very pleasant weather preparing to answer questions about the
library at a information fair associated with the Santa Clarita Independent
Film Festival. Unfortunately, the
festival is spread out and so far I have only spoken to two people in the past
1 ½ hour – one man wanted to know if we have wi-fi at the library (not yet),
the other person was the T-Mobile rep in the booth next to mine who wanted to
know if I was satisfied with my current cell phone plan. There is a mediocre musician playing guitar
and his own morose songs, and the occasional group of Harleys roaring by on
their way to some kind of big Harley-fest going on across town. Not the worst way to spend a weekend
afternoon, although not my first choice. I have no one to blame but myself,
Oh dear, the singing guy has broken out a harmonica.
Another hour on and still no customers. The organizers assure me things will happen
at 4, but I am disbelieving. The whiny
guy with the harmonica spent way to much time on stage, and a woman who was
pretty talented sang a few songs in between. Now a band with shiny, shiny drums and guitars are doing sound
checks. The only people here to listen
are the bored staff at the booths and the band’s girlfriends.
I left after the band started.
At least I got most of my book read.
